General Information about the Organization and Mission

The mission of the Hunger and Health Coalition is to relieve poverty and hunger in a compassionate manner for families and individuals who are experiencing economic hardship and food shortages. This assistance may include food, medicine, and referrals to other community resources.   The Hunger and Health Coalition meets emergency needs while acting as a community resource assisting those in need to find a more permanent solution.

The Hunger and Health Coalition provides food and pharmacy assistance to low income families in the area. According to the US Census, 26% of people in Watauga County are living in poverty. Many more have incomes that are above the federal poverty guideline but are not enough to meet their basic needs. Families with limited incomes are often faced with making choices between essential needs. For example, a family might have to choose to pay the electric bill to keep the heat on rather than buying groceries. Seemingly insignificant problems can have devastating effects on families living from paycheck to paycheck. An unexpected car repair or illness can make limited resources even more scarce, leaving no money for food and other basic needs.

• Volunteer: The Hunger and Health Coalition owes much of its continued success to our volunteers.  It is only because of these selfless and dedicated individuals that we have been able to maintain the quality of service the community has come to expect from The Hunger and Health Coalition. We have a variety of different opportunities for volunteers, ranging from packing meals for a couple of hours, helping to serve dinner on Thanksgiving Day, to completing an internship at the HHC. To volunteer or learn more about our internship opportunities, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected].
