Edward Frederick Malkin was born May 16, 1891 in Sprucedale, the son of Joseph Malkin and Anne Jane Smith.
At the time of the 1891 census the family was identified as living in McMurrich Township. At the time of the 1901 census, the family was identified as living in Sprucedale.
In his Officer’s Declaration Papers, it is identified that Edward enlisted in Sunridge April 18, 1916.
Edward further indicated that he had had been part of the 23rd Regiment of the Parry Sound Militia. He identified his occupation as a merchant.
In his Certificate of Service, Edward is identified as having enlisted in the 162nd Battalion on April 18, 1916. He is identified as having served in Canada, England and France with the 162nd Battalion; posted to General List. , 4th Reserve Battalion, 1st Battalion and Western Ontario Regimental Depot.
He is identified as having been wounded twice: the first time November 5, 1917 and the 2nd August 30, 1918.
He was awarded the ‘Military Cross’.
Edward landed in England on November 11, 1916. He transferred from the 162nd to the General List in December.
In January he transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion. In May he transferred to the 1st Battalion in France.
On November 5, 1917 he reported being wounded on duty.
In February 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross.
On August 30/September 1, 1918 he was again wounded .
In October he was identified ‘to be Temp. Captain’.
Edward married Helen Mary Haight on June 9, 1920 in Parry Sound. In the marriage registration, Edward was identified a merchant in Sprucedale and Helen as a nurse in Parry Sound.
Edward, Helen and 1 month old daughter Helen were identified as living in Sprucedale in 1921. They also had a son Edward born in Sprucedale in 1923.
Edward died September 24, 1965 in Vancouver.
