LLOYD, CLIFFORD JOHN: #B133938
Clifford ‘Cliff’ John Lloyd was the son of John and Olive (Lloyd) Ladd of Whitestone. Clifford enlisted on Oct 18 1942 shortly after his 18th birthday he and a friend hitch hiked to North Bay to enlist. They hoped to serve together but his friend went to one camp and Cliff to another.
Above is Cliff Lloyd’s driver’s licence which qualified him to drive everything except armoured vehicles. Cliff was in the Tank Corps, and to the best of his son John Lloyd’s recollection, drove a Churchill tank and therefore must have received that qualification later. (The Churchill tank was used by the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps in Italy, Normandy and NW Europe.)
John Lloyd recalls that his dad, Cliff’ didn’t talk very much about his service . He told me once that one of his buddies got in trouble and was thrown in lockup. Once when they were on a march through a town Dad volunteered to be his escort. Subsequently they were handcuffed together. The only problem was Dad was 5 ft. 6 and his buddy was 6 ft. so it looked like dad was the bad guy, not his friend .
John further recalled that once when Cliff was recovering from rheumatic fever in the hospital in England two American soldiers who he was acquainted with were recovered enough from their injuries to get a pass for the evening. They attended a movie at a local theater. Unfortunately the theater was destroyed during an air raid and the two Americans were killed.
Cliff was discharged March 18, 1946.
