Emerson Bates was born January 7, 1899 in Burks Falls, the son of John Cyrus Bates and Frances Goulding.

At the time of the 1901 census, the family was identified as living in Burks Falls.

At the time of the 1911 census, the family was identified as living on Lot 10, Concession 8, Ryerson Twp.

 

Emerson signed his Attestation papers on March 20, 1916 in Burks Falls

On October 20, 1926 Emerson married Olive ‘Nadine’ Smith in Burks Falls.

Emerson and Nadine had a son Keith Douglas Bates born in Burks Falls Sept. 9, 1928.

Emerson died August 19, 1953 in Burks Falls.

In his Discharge Certificate , Emerson is identified as having served in the C.C.R.C. in France and Belgium. (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp – the centre in France where troops were held before being sent to reinforce existing units.)

Emerson arrived in England on November 16, 1916 on the SS. Caronia. He was transferred from the 162nd to the 34th Battalion and then to the 4th Reserve Battalion. In August he was transferred to the Y S Battalion. He was hospitalized with influenza in late 1917/early 1918.

After his illness he returned to the 4th Reserve Battalion and then to the 1st Battalion in October 1918.

In 1919 he was again severely ill with influenza.
