The Toronto Railway Company (TRC) was a private transit company that operated in Toronto from 1885?? to 1921 when it was taken over by the Old City of Toronto as the Toronto Transportation Commission eventually being renamed the Toronto Transit Commission to better reflect its intended mandate.

The TRC was the most profitable transit operator of it's size in North America, almost four times more profitable then U.S. systems. TRC was able to do this because it encouraged a relatively dense pattern of settlement. Because few uneconomic lines were built into the suburbs of 1920's Toronto, the development that occurred tended to be compacts so that people were still within walking distance of the rail line. Transit service only expanded after it could be economically justified.
