The City Idol project was a volunteer-run grassroots project that ran from February 2006 until June 2006.

Their goals were to add some fun and excitement to the 2006 Municipal election, to get people thinking about local politics and to bring people together to share and explore their own ideas for a better Toronto. On opening night held at the Danforth Music Hall, contestants had one minute to impress hundreds of audience members to mark an X beside their top ten choices for City Idol.

After City Idol was over and the four winners were declared, they and a number of city idol runner ups ran for city council seats in the November 13, 2006 municipal election.

City Idol inventor Dave 'Mez' Meslin, then ran Who Runs This Town trying his best to keep the election process honest.
