A Call for Bloor Yonge Square

Toronto’s many neighbourhoods give the city the authenticity and character we all enjoy. From The Beach to Yorkville to Chinatown and Little Italy there is always something to discover. At the center of it all, is Yonge Street and Bloor Street, the most important intersection in Toronto and perhaps one of the most important in all of Canada. Shops, restaurants and cafes to satisfy any taste welcome both residents and tourists alike. The intersection is a transit hub, where the two main subway lines collide.

Since the 1920s this intersection and its neighbourhood has continued to grow, but it lacks any true, dynamic public space. With the demolition of the south-east corner for the now failed "1 Bloor East", "43.670041","-79.386335" project, we have the opportunity of a lifetime to make Bloor and Yonge the showpiece of Toronto.

The Toronto Public Space Committee along with its many supporters has taken on a brand new challenge ~ to convince the residents, businesses and politicians of Toronto that we deserve a public square and park in the heart of the city. We aim to create the will and desire to fund and develop a brand new Bloor Yonge Square!

This site will provide updates on the campaign and its progress.

Petition

To: City of Toronto

The intersection of Bloor and Yonge is at the heart of the largest and most vibrant city in Canada – Toronto. However, over the years it has been left to degrade and is now a symbol of mediocrity. We can do better and now we have the opportunity. Because of the failure of the One Bloor East project, the south-east corner of Bloor and Yonge is now vacant and we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to build something great.

We are asking that the City of Toronto expropriate the land on the south-east corner of Yonge and Bloor to build a public square and park. The advantages of this are numerous including:

- Building a series of great public spaces along the spine of Toronto – Yonge Street. - Revitalizing the length of Yonge Street between Yonge and Dundas - Creating a great public space above one of the busiest subway stations in the city. - A new place to hold public events and an excellent tourist draw for Toronto. - An enormous benefit to the surrounding businesses and residents, drawing residents and tourists to the neighbourhood like never before.

With the necessary public will and partnerships, the money can be found and the site can be made into a showpiece for Toronto. We ask that the City of Toronto move as quickly as possible to secure the land for public use.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
