PURPLE HEART DAY

The local organization, Military Order of the Purple Heart sponsors this event each August.  The mission of the organization is to promote, advocate and generate a sense of community among combat-wounded veterans.  The history of the purple heart, which was originally called the Military Badge of Honor, goes back to the Revolutionary War.  It was created by George Washington.  The local events honor combat wounded veterans.  They include a presentation of the resolution by the Florida Cabinet, along with a Purple Heart Day Banquet, and a ceremony at the Capitol.  During this ceremony special recognition will be given to veterans and families who have lost loved ones due to war.

There are an estimated 80 Purple Heart veterans in our area.
