When locals heard that the escrow was about to close and that the Skyview Drive-in Flea Market/Skyview Drive-in Theatre would shortly be owned by Sutter Health, they mobilized and gathered thousands of petition signatures in order to save the flea market. Hundreds of people make their living at the Flea, and their displacement would permanently affect the community. The flea market was closed indefinitely in December of 2007, though dates to begin construction are uncertain. The land was purchased by the Sutter Health maternity center and will be used to expand on the preexisting center next to the flea market.

Currently, Goodwill Industries took over operation of what is now called the Santa Cruz Flea Market until ground is broken and the building of the new structures begins.
