Every winter there is a 15 foot tall Menorah put at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Water Street.

History

Chebad by the Sea has been lighting the Menorah in downtown Santa Cruz since 2006.

Local atheists have been lobbying City Hall since 2008 not to allow the menorah to be lit on public property.

In December 2009 the city of Santa Cruz informed the temple of Chebad by the Sea the organization would be required to hire private security for the Menorah lighting. Later, officials decided a round-the-clock guard was unnecessary.
