The Capitola Theater was a movie theater from 1948 when it first opened and up until 1996. Then it was used as a performing arts venue until it closed down in 2005. The current owners of the property is planning to demolish the theater in order to build a hotel/conference center in it's place. A historical note: before the theater was built, it was the site of Hotel Capitola, which was destroyed by a fire in December 1929.
