James and Wayland was a dry good, groceries, and clothing business that operated in Powhatan in the 1880s.

Dr. William H. James, of the firm James and Wayland, merchants and lumber dealers, was born in Tennessee in 1844. Enlisted in the confederate army in 1861 and surrendered in Jackson MS at the end of the war. Commenced the practice of medicine under Dr. Boardman and entered the Missouri Medical College in 1866. Came to Powhatan in 1869. He entered the mercantile life in 1879 and formed a partnership with F.M. Wayland in 1880 (p.797)
