The Waters family has a long and connected history in Oakland.
Donald Waters (1841 – 1929) and Mary Ellen McCarthy (Waters) (c.1852 – 1924) married in 1877 in San Francisco. They had 7 children:

- George Francis Waters (1879 – 1960)
- Maude Florence Waters (Stratton) (1881 – 1955)
- Arthur Robert Waters (1883 – 1940)
- Oswald Waters (1885 – 1967)
- John Cornelius Waters (1887 – 1946)
- Catherine Waters (1890 – 1961)
The family lived in San Francisco, then in Contra Costa County where the dairy farm was. The family first appears in Oakland in the 1909 directory and the 1910 census, at 3832 Howe Street.
The also married into the Fitzsimmons family and the Costa family.
