The main campus of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, formerly known as the Ernest O. Lawrence Berkeley Lab and still sometimes simply called the Berkeley Lab, is located in the hills above the Berkeley campus of the University of California. LBNL straddles the Oakland Berkeley Border, and about one-half of the LBNL site, along with one-third of its buildings, is actually located within Oakland's city limits. LBNL also operates the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center at 415 - 20th Street in Uptown.
LBNL is named after Ernest O. Lawrence, winner of the 1939 Nobel Prize in recognition of his invention of the cyclotron.
