James McGivney (1842-1908) served on City Council for two terms: 1883-1884 and 1885-1886.

James McGivney was a master plumber. Born in Ireland,6 he died at age 66 and left no family.4 He lived at 665 Franklin St.5

McGivney contested the election of John Pierce in 1887 (and lost).1 The case went all the way to the Supreme Court of California, where it was decided in 1890- this may be the first case of an Oakland election reaching the California Supreme Court. The full text of the case can be read here.
