Oakland's rocks are generally not favorable for fossils. Shaly parts of the Orinda Formation have yielded abundant marine and terrestrial fossils during the excavations of the Caldecott Tunnel bores, especially the fourth bore, but surface outcrops are generally barren. The Late Jurassic mudstone of the Knoxville Formation has yielded sparse marine fossils of belemnites and Buchia bivalves.

Oakland's sediments, however, have produced notable Pleistocene fossils similar to those in the remarkable fossil beds of Irvington and the Rancho La Brea tar pits. [details TK]
