Mississauga used to be called Toronto Township. It was a suburb of Toronto. In 1968 Toronto Township became the Town of Mississauga.

Mississauga was named after the native peoples who original inhabited the area the Mississauga Indians They were a band of the Ojibway tribe.

In 1979 the Mississauga Railway Disaster occurred a train carrying chemicals resulted in a mass evacation.
