Airport experiences and opinions

From Cynthia:

Flying to Houghton: Unlike Mark Gryzwa....I have been on more delayed or canceled flights than I can count, starting when I was a student, when I witnessed my luggage being unloaded and carried into the airport during a layover in Appleton WI even though I was continuing on to Detroit. The flight attendant told me that "nothing could be done" so I was stuck on the plane while my suitcase spent the night in WI and I continued on to Detroit. But the straw that broke the camel's back was one fall recruiting trip when I was stuck in Houghton (which is a great place to be stuck in....much better than, say, the Atlanta Hartsfield airport) but I had work that needed to be done and it didn't look like a plane would be taking off from CMX for days. Why? Houghton is very foggy in the fall and planes can't land at CMX (Houghton County Airport) and I have been told that planes are prohibited from landing there using instruments, because the runway is too short. And if a plane can't land there, there is no plane for you to take off in! So do what the Yoopers do.....fly out of MQT. The airport in Marquette used to be an air force base. It has nice long runways, more airlines serve it (including Delta, which is a million times better than United that serves CMX) and all the latest technology. Last year, CMX was closed for weeks because they were waiting for a weather sensor to be shipped to them. (probably couldn't get it there because a plane couldn't land). Here is a report....CMX is the 4th worst airport for delays in the US: http://milecards.com/top-25-best-and-worst-u-s-airports-for-delays/

Cheaper direct flights DTW to Marquette or Iron Mtn.  on Delta.   Much cheaper than United to Houghton Cty Airport.

If you fly into IMT, rental car from Avis (expensive)  but also try La Belle's Rent-A-Car 906-779-1975. Great car rental. Off site, but he comes and picks you up and drops you back off at the end. Cheaper than Avis.
