Overview

Uchi is a contemporary Japanese dining and sushi restaurant located at 904 Westheimer Rd. in Houston, Texas. Houston's Uchi opened in Feb. 2012 and since then has won dozens of awards for its food, atmosphere, and service. Besides the fresh, unique sushi flavors, Uchi is known for its eye-catching modern architectural design.

History

The first Uchi restaurant opened in Austin, Texas in 2003. Owner and chef Tyson Cole refurbished a 2,700-square-foot home to create his restaurant, and “Uchi” is the Japanese translation of the word “house.”

Later, Cole opened Uchi restaurants in Uchiko, Dallas, and Houston. According to the Uchi Houston website, Lance Gillum is the current chef de cuisine in Houston. He came to Uchi in 2016 after attending Le Cordon Bleu in Austin, Texas.

Menu

Uchi’s menu offers a delicious variety of hot and cold sushi, sashimi, tastings, greens, makimono, agemono and desserts. The menu rotates seasonally and there are daily specials.

Uchi’s philosophy is “combining local seasonal ingredients with an infinite spectrum of seafood from around the globe,” according to their website. One of Uchi’s most requested dishes is the refreshing zero sen, a sushi roll consisting of yellowtail, avocado, shallot and cilantro for $12.50.
