Brother Calixtus Burial Tomorrow

Funeral services will be conducted in New York City tomorrow for the Rev. Brother Calixtus, 76, who died Saturday in Poughkeepsie.

Former auxiliary provincial and community supervisor of the Brothers of the Christian Schools of the New York-New England province, he was born James Edward Curran, in Clintonville.

His sister Theresa Curran, of Utica, until a few years ago served a long period of time as district nurse for the Saranac Lake Society for the Control of Tuberculosis. A cousin, Catherine Curran, lives in this village at 46 Margaret street. Brother Calixtus was a frequent visitor to Saranac Lake.

He had many degrees conferred upon him including Doctor of Laws, by St. John's University, Brooklyn, in recognition of his services to the schools there. In 1944, marking his golden jubilee as a Christian Brother, Manhattan College conferred upon him the Doctor Pedagogy.

In 1948, during the cententary of the Christian Brothers in the United States, the Diocesan School Board of New York, awarded him a scroll of honor, the first ever issued by the archdiocese for service in the schools of New York.
