"The Children" was painted by local artist Sam Welty after he and Supporters of Portsmouth Public Art President, John Joyce staged a photography session of local children visiting the Children's Museum. A composite of these photos was used to compose the mural. With the generous donation of the wall by the building owner, funding was provided by generous citizens to Supporters of Portsmouth Public Art, a 501c(3) organization dedicated to purchasing and installing public art in Portsmouth.
