Like fishing, the remote and rugged splendor found throughout Burns and Harney County make hiking incredibly popular for locals, but this easily extends to visitors, as well. Rather hiking in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge or on the Steens Mountain, hikers must be prepared to have their breath taken away. Rather on-foot or on horseback, the thousands of wide-open acres available to the public ensures return trips.[1] More information on trails and recreation can be found at the BLM’s Recreation Site. When planning this trip, never forget the basic supplies such as a first aid kit or a camera.

(Hiking in Harney County, ~40 miles from Burns)
