The New River Valley (NRV) Community Kitchen is an initiative of the Prices Fork Food Project to develop an integrated community kitchen, farm-to-table restaurant and mixed-income senior home within the facilities of the old Price Fork Elementary School facilities. The project is currently still in development.

General About the Organization/Mission

The New River Valley Community Kitchen seeks to provide a unified space to benefit the entrepreneurial, agricultural, and residential communities of Montgomery County and the surrounding area.

The project’s management team consists of representatives from the New River Valley Planning District Commission, Taylor Hollow Construction, the Town of Blacksburg, local nonprofits and businesses, farmers, and citizens. The NRV Community Kitchen received funding through the Appalachian Foodshed Project and Community Development Block Grants. A grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission will allow for full funding of construction and equipment.

History of Organization

Price’s Fork Elementary School was sold by the Montgomery County School District to a Radford developer in December 2013, who bought the property with the plan to convert much of the building to apartments designed for older residents.

Programs and Projects

Currently, the management team is surveying potential kitchen users and local entrepreneurs to determine specific needs for the community kitchen space. The team is also conducting market research among potential restaurant customers to determine demand.
