Biography


Dr. William Christopher Krauss was born in Attica and graduated from the Attica Union School in the year 1880 as valedictorian. He attended Cornell for courses in medical science. He graduated with his bachelor from Cornell in 1884 during which he earned the Horace K. White prize in veterinary science and a special final honors.

1886 William graduated from the honor class at Bellevue Hospital Medical College and in 1888 graduated Magna cum laude from the University of Berlin, Germany with  M. D. degree.

He had associate editor positions at several medical journals from 1890-1900 including: Buffalo Medical Journal, Neurologisches Centralblatt from Berlin, Germany, and the Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases. During this time he authored many papers on the medical subject, especially relating to the nervous system.

1890 William served as secretary for the Buffalo Obstetrical Society, 1892 as the president of the Buffalo Microscopical Club, from 1891-94 William was an organizer and secretary of the Buffalo Academy of Medicine,  secretary of the American Microscopical Society from 1896-99 and became president in 1899, president of the Medical Association Central NY 1889-1899, president of the Erie County Medical Society in 1903.

William worked as a neurologist for the following hospitals

  • Woman's Buffalo Eye and Ear Infirmary
  • Batavia Hospital
  • Brooks Memorial Hospital (Dunkirk, NY)

Dr. William Krauss also worked as Professor of Pathology for Niagara University from 1890-94 and Professor of Nervous Diseases from 1894-99.

William was married in Salamanca, NY to Clara Krieger on September 4, 1900.

Several years before his death in 1909 William suffered from cardiac difficulties, on July 9, 1909 he sailed from New York to Europe to consult with physicians seeking aide. After returning to New York City after a stormy voyage on September 21, 1909 William died the day after arriving from endocarditis at the age of 45.
