Background
Irazu coffee shop is named after the Irazu Volcano, which is the tallest volcano in Costa Rica. The ash that settled on the area, after many volcanic eruptions took place many years ago, has made the soil fertile and perfect for growing Arabica coffee, which is one of the most popular varieties of coffee in the world.
The Irazu coffee shop is owned by a Costa Rican named Rod Salazar. The company is a small, family-owned business that was first located on Church Street in Burlington, North Carolina, but then moved to the Elon University campus (in North Carolina) three and a half years ago. Rod Salazar’s mother, Rosario Villalobos, has worked here from its opening and her daughter works in the coffee shop several days a week as well.
Inside Irazu, there are many couches and tables available for customers to use while they enjoy drinking coffee, having a small group meeting, or just listening to music. There is a 180-degree window-view around Irazu shop to create the open space, so customers can see the outside as well. They also have a choice for outdoor tables if the customers prefer the breeze and the sun outside. Irazu coffee shop is decorated with brown and earth tone colors, which makes customers feel relaxed and peaceful when they enter the room. The mural in the main wall of Irazu is painted as a replica from the artwork found in the 5 Colones bill of Costa Rica, which does not exist anymore, but which is considered a work of art. Even though the banknote is not being used anymore, the picture shows the transition of people from collecting coffee beans to exporting it by ships.
Irazu provides a variety of coffee choices as well as other desserts and snack bars. Coffee beans in Irazu are imported from many countries, including countries in South America, Africa and Central America. As Rod Salazar said, the coffee beans that Irazu uses for making coffee are really fresh. Irazu buys fresh coffee every week and require the coffee grains to be toasted before being sent to Irazu. In fact, Irazu even sells ungrounded coffee beans to customer if they want any. They use the best coffee beans and syrups. Irazu offers 23 flavors of syrups to customize the customers' favorite cup of coffee. Moreover, the milk is purchased from a local farm, which ensures the freshness of the drinks. Irazu does not provide any discount due to the finest quality of the coffee, but they do offer gift certificates.
