Las Cumbres

From an article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel:

Start at the Lexington Reservoir and climb up Black Road for four and a half miles, winding around 40 switchback curves, past Christmas tree farms and views of the valley floor 3,000 feet below.

If you're lucky, you'll find Las Cumbres, a self-governing mountain community off Skyline Highway.

Unlike other mountain communities, Las Cumbres has its own water company, fire department and several committees with titles such as architectural control, facilities and roads, land management and emergency preparedness.

Las Cumbres also has social groups such as the Tuesday Soup Group, a weekly potluck dinner and the Brew Crew, a group of men who brew beer in their garages and serve it free at community gatherings.

It's a paradise for the children of the community, who go sledding when it snows, hike miles of trails and eat all the ice cream in the fridge when the power goes out.

Las Cumbres started in 1973,  Its is located off Skyline a few miles north of Black Road with a the posted “private” entrance that is easy to miss. The development of approximately 125 homes is situated in approx. 1200 acres of high mountain country.  The biggest neighbor here is Castle Rock State Park, with more than 3600 acres of relatively empty country. No stores. No gas stations. And only a few lost tourists.
