Western American was a local African American newspaper, published from 1926 to 1929. In 1929, it was succeeded by The Oakland Independent.
Dr. William M. Watts contributed a medical advice column to the newspaper, "How to Keep Well" during the period of time he practiced medicine in Oakland.
The Western American ran a beauty and popularity contest for African American women called "Miss Golden State" in 1927. 1 Mrs. Richard York won the popularity contest, and Marilyn Adams won the beauty portion. 2
