Judith Truman is an alumna and Townie. She remembers when the Wiki was this new project that was slowly gathering speed and documenting the city and community of Davis. It's nifty that there's a town culture! Her wiki-fu has increased over the years. She enjoys reading, cooking, set dancing, social dancing, weaving, and more!

  • I'm trying to seed articles from items mentioned in Wendy Weitzel's "Comings and Goings" column. Downtown has been changing a lot over the past few years.

Favorites: tea list chicken salad Village Bakery Barberi bread: it's like sesame foccacia Newsbeat greeting cards and Zots Davis Food Coop obscure vegetables Nugget general grocery selection Yolo County Library - Mary L. Stephens Branch books galore, plus DVDs, audio CDs, and more books!! Going here saves me yards of shelf space annually. I once had to use a Bic pen to crack my own rusty bike lock off my bike here.

Discussion Questions:

Is there any resource in town where I can take home-canned produce and have somebody take a look at it and say nice things like "The reason the canned fruit has this abnormal visual appearance is because of XYZ procedural issue." ?

Recommendations for eye care professionals? It's about time for new glasses.

Note for Self: "The best way to put an image above a table is to put your cursor in the top table cell and then press the up arrow key (like word), you'll then be on a new, blank line. Then you can use the image button to add an image. If you double click on the image, you will then have the option to float it to the left or the right (right is usually best). To drag an existing image to this same spot, use the same up-arrow in table cell, and drag the image to the empty line. Hope that helps!"

Also Templates will probably help me to not edit the wiki by copy/pasting pieces of one page into another, just to get a chunk of formatting for a page I'm building.

2010-10-04 14:57:30   The low priced items in the ZT menu are add-ons to the ramen, I don't think you can order them alone. Do you still want to know what they are in english? —CharlesWinkelmann

2010-10-21 11:12:39   No problem! I had looked briefly a couple of times already and didn't see it. Finally went through each individual double-apostrophe to see whether there was a full quote in its place, before noticing the missing bit. —TomGarberson

2010-10-21 13:15:53   Nice recipe! Early on, there were a bunch of recipes added to the wiki, but at some point they stopped. I have a couple that might fit in there if it goes another week. My wife loves "Skash" — zukes, yellow squash, onion and apples (that last ingredient changes everything). If I can find my stick blender (still have a shrinking number of boxes two months after a move!), we'll be making lima bean soup. When I do, I'll pay attention and write down the recipe. I pretty much always cook without a recipe. —Evan 'JabberWokky' Edwards

2010-10-21 23:16:55   I had lemon chicken in the style you describe at Ding How. Unfortunately, it was vegetarian. But it was delicious. (The vegetarian 'meat' at Ding How has an uncanny resemblance in both taste and texture to real meat!)

Also: Peet's. Mishka has too much attitude. —ChristyMarsden

2010-10-23 02:50:08   Great page. I'd say archive after a few weeks. Thanks for starting this! —DonShor

2010-10-27 17:53:48   But like... that's actual work... —hankim

2010-10-27 21:08:39   In my experience, whenever a campus-affiliated organization starts off on a project they really end up doing nothing useful and spending a bunch of money, then they go on about the amazing job that they did. Campus Recreation and ASUCD are the ones that most easily come to mind. Anyway, when I decided to do a healthy cut from 220 pounds to 205 pounds, I ended up saving a bunch of time and money on food. Who knew doing a bunch of cooking at the beginning of the week and then living off of rice, cold sandwiches, tilapia fillets, chicken breasts, and boiled eggs could save time and money? —hankim

2010-11-03 12:22:52   I think they were editing to open the project, and so were withdrawing their prior request to not edit the page. Check the concurrent edit made to the main page, which seems to confirm that intent. Yeah, we wiki regulars like to keep things nice and threaded so we can see how the discussion evolved, but I can see somebody deleting their request with the intent that it simply be withdrawn rather than hiding information. Kind of like how people periodically delete entire entries when they just meant to delete their comment.

Of course, I am not them, so I could be completely and utterly wrong in how I'm reading that edit. But, I think there's room for it not to be the typical "I'm deleting my words because I don't want to talk anymore". —JabberWokky

2010-11-03 12:33:58   Hey, as somebody who is not at all educated about Chinese cuisine but loves good Beef Chow Fun, what is "wok hay"? Google is not very helpful, as the term seems to be used for various things, including restaurant names. While I'm at it, is there a difference between Chow Fun and Ho Fun (or are they, as I've assumed, transliterations to English menus of the same word)? I merely know what I like and try to order something different when I see it on the menu, but I have zero culinary knowledge of the various dishes. —JabberWokky

2010-11-03 13:02:34   Ah, ha! I know exactly what you are talking about. That is why when I lived in Pennsylvania I always ordered from one place versus the other two nearby places. There was a scorchy, bright flavor missing from the other two restaurants. Different from, but similar to how properly browned meat transforms a dish's flavor. I was unaware of the term, but I certainly know the taste. Thanks for the enlightenment. —JabberWokky

2011-12-01 22:10:57   I've never branched out from naan on the bread front, but I'll have to give the other stuff a try now. Thanks for the recommendation! I'm honestly terrified to get lassis through a store because I know I'd get hooked. It'd be like if I started making thai iced tea at home... bad news. Tasty, tasty bad news. —TomGarberson

2012-02-06 12:59:12   It's plausible that she did her hair. http://www.hairbyelizabeth.com/about_us shows a decent number of Hollywood area jobs. Of course, that does not mean she has the rights to the photo, and you were almost certainly right to remove it, but the whole copyright thing is a bit confusing to many people. Based on her website, she does some pretty neat stuff. Far more than is noted on the wiki. She has a wide ranging portfolio, including special effects and hair restoration for the bald. Cool stuff. —JabberWokky

2012-02-13 14:52:42   For most purposes, 6mbps downstream and 3mbps upstream would be enough. I've got a faster option through Comcast - I think 20/10 (downstream/upstream) or something, and in practice I usually get around 12/7 on speedtest.net. 1 mbps might be enough for some bnet games if that's the only thing you're doing, but if you're likely to have anyone else in the household using the interwebs at the same time, it probably won't cut it. A friend of mine has a 6/1.5 mbps connection in Woodland and he runs into problems with Modern Warfare (360) any time a roommate does anything more than just check e-mail. —TomGarberson

2012-09-18 00:35:16   Hi Judith, You added a table of contents to the private tutoring page, but the links in this table of contents don't all work. Specifically, in the math section, when one clicks on Douglas Halket, Mike and Terri Leonard, and Barnabas Truman, one is not taken to their listings. Can you fix this? —TerriLeonard

2012-11-21 17:11:56   Thank you for your input on that page. It's good to get another voice, and it's apparently important that it be a female voice. Since apparently the fact that there are 3ish men disagreeing with CO is a sign of sexism and oppression. —TomGarberson

2012-11-21 17:16:03   I just decided to leave that conversation, but I really do appreciate the information you added. The steak page might benefit from some of the grading information, as it covers restaurants and local suppliers. Even just putting the basic info there might allow people to, over time, identify what's available where. I'm pondering Ethical Shopping as a starting entry (to avoid getting into the topic of food until after things are more calm). I personally try to do a few things like avoid over-packaging, and I'll bet I'm not the only one. This general topic (being an informed consumer) strikes me as something that would be useful, isn't collected elsewhere from a local perspective, and is not really well represented on the wiki. I think. —JabberWokky

  • Green and Local Gift Ideas is relevant, but doesn't fully cover ethical shopping. (And I agree with JW — thank you for chiming in). —cp
    • Nice catch... I thought there was something sort of connected out there. I just couldn't recall what it was. Isn't there something similar for non-profits or... another topic vaguely related? I may be thinking of volunteer opportunities. -jw

2013-03-19 21:20:29   Judith—thank you for the thoughts. No I don't live in Davis. I am, however, passioniate about Wikis and animal rights. Obviously more people then myself had concerns. I just lit the spark that brought it out for a good solid discussion. If people want to criticize me for that, I'll gladly take it. A much larger purpose is being served —PeteB

2013-07-27 20:19:19   Nice catch. —JabberWokky

2013-09-01 14:16:44   Not amazing. First of all, they were not fresh, even though I was there not long after they opened... they had clearly been refrigerated. (I don't know if they are made elsewhere and shipped?) Second, I'm a bit of a croissant snob, and these were definitely not light and flaky the way a croissant should be. Basically, it was not much different from eating an OK but not amazing donut. I thought they were better with cream than without. I suppose I should add this to the page... —CovertProfessor

2013-09-05 12:36:13   Thank you Judith. I completely understand where you are coming from. I found the comments to be inappropriate and degrading to others. Is there any way to clear any page of derogatory comments like that? I'd hate for someone from Sacramento or Woodland to visit this page and see a comment like this. It really offends me and I'm fairly certain it would offend them, since some of the employees are from Woodland and Sacramento. —AjayHira

2013-09-26 08:28:14   That is very fine by me, Judith, we'll leave the wish list alone and let dust descend on it. It's charming, right! :-) —ConstantiaOomen

2013-09-26 08:46:46   Thank you for your feedback. —PeteB

2013-09-26 09:34:23   There was a little discussion with CP over the 'Wish list' (as you know) - God knows I like(d) him - and he was acting funny: edgy. I just had this idea to brush up the Wish page a little. I said, to lighten up the whole situation, because he was irritated: "What's up, Doc?" just trying to make peace, and suddenly, the next day, he deletes his own page. And now I am the big bad 'guy'? I think there's more to this. —ConstantiaOomen

2013-12-21 22:26:56   have you checked out Ocean Fish and Chips in Sac ( http://www.oceanfishandchips.net/ )? It's legit... —MikeyCrews

2014-02-10 18:25:15   Because people don't read it since it not only has weak content, it's in a dying medium. Who is going to pay to advertise in that? But when you can force students to pay for it, like AggieTV or a whole bunch of other unused products and services on campus, who cares if it doesn't raise its standards? —hankim

2014-08-28 15:35:32   I thought about removing all the messages, but it still leaves the "messages!" notice up with no hint as to what it is there for (until you look in the history of your profile page). It's not a bad thing to clean it up; I almost did it myself, and have done so in the past. I'm more mentioning it here to kind of think about it aloud and see if there's something I didn't think about. It's probably a half dozen of one, six of the other type decision where either way works. But, as it's a nice thing to do, thanks! —JabberWokky

2014-09-15 20:46:35   Forsooth: there's NO "Woodland Celtic Games," and the Scots'll get a bit shirty if you don't acknowledge their focus on Scotland! That's the "Sacramento Valley Highland Games," also known as "the friendly games." It's true that they've generously invited a group that Irish dances — and Scottish Country Dances, and Highland Dances — to perform on the Country Dance Stage for many, many years. But I think that's because the organizer of that stage is gracious, smart, and knows some of the Irish dancers when they were "young Turks" in the Sacramento RSCDS branch. Etcetera. As far as eye care professionals, I've been going to Dr. Wayne Schrader OD for decades, and I'm very satisfied. I would recommend him and his office. —DougWalter

2014-10-08 21:38:43   I missed that part that he stole away some basic text. If I would have seen that, I would have re installed that text. (http://daviswiki.org/Bizarro_World). Thanks for fixing, maybe he can give this comment as a comment. —ConstantiaOomen

2015-01-26 13:48:30   Yeah, that was actually a bug you spotted. I'll fix it up sometime late tonight, but until then it won't show any of the template options when creating a new page. So your confusion was well-placed :) —PhilipNeustrom

2015-01-28 22:41:13   RE: images, did you know about tbe alignment dialog when you double-click on the image? If not, could you help rephrase the help page at https://localwiki.org/main/Help? You should be able to change the alignment in the dialog once you double-click. You can also change the image size in that dialog, though you can do that using image resize handles if you use Firefox. To move the image around the page, just drag the image around. It sometimes acts a bit weird because the image is floated, so sometimes to get it to just the right spot you have to drag the image and let it go inside of a paragraph (to align it), etc. Let me know if that answers your question! —PhilipNeustrom

2015-01-28 22:49:15   Also, do you think a short video tutorial on page editing would help? I could throw a quick one together (or someone else could) if you think it's something folks' watch. —PhilipNeustrom

2015-01-28 23:35:41   Thank you for the editing help on the Widowed Persons Circle listing. It was my first effort on Davis Wiki. David —wdhaggerty

2015-03-22 21:19:02   Agree totally, the series of numbers that make up the IP address is as impersonal as it gets. It's like a face without eyes, a nose and a mouth doing things and making you wonder what his/her intentions are. In a vote, I would vote against this way of editing. Spam is a plague and a constant struggle. It just keeps on coming. —ConstantiaOomen

2015-03-30 20:07:37   I didn't delete the events board. The site changes do not include an event's board. I deleted the page that talked about the events board because the events board no longer exists. I liked the events board. —DavidGrundler

2015-04-23 23:13:07   Hey Judith, great work holding the spammers accountable. I appreciate that you are approaching them in hopes of starting a dialogue. It appears many are proving unresponsive to your attempts...frustrating! Sure has me wishing that there weren't these new IP address log-ins making it easier for these ne'er-do-wells to promote their anarchy or whatever it is they're sellin'. Though I guess these anonymous log-ins are the equivalent of bogus and/or unexplained wiki accounts with people using pseudonyms. Anyway. Keep up the good work in protecting our shared resource. =) —EliseKane

2015-04-24 15:20:47   Hi Judith! Yeah, that IP login stuff is totally confounding. It's a nice approach that you're giving people the benefit of the doubt but are also coming down swiftly when they just prove to be vandals. Thank you for the kind words about the band pages I've been creating and/or adding to. It's fun trying to fill the informational gaps as much as I can. =) —EliseKane

2015-05-26 12:30:15   For the record, if two people delete an item at the same time -- say, something about the Air Force that isn't Davis specific -- the second one in gets "Item not found." —JabberWokky

2015-08-31 09:25:16   Judith, I almost deleted the Sahaya page for the same reason. I then found that it is headquartered in Davis. I'll add that information a bit later. Sue —SueHjerpe

2015-08-31 09:41:09   I restored the Sahaya page and noted that it is based in Davis. I tried to create a map for its location, but couldn't get it to take the address, 2949 Portage Bay W # 195. Sue —SueHjerpe

2015-10-14 13:46:25   Web Design in Montreal, Davis. You haven't heard of the Montreal neighborhood, just a wee bit north of Downtown? —JabberWokky

2016-02-08 17:00:18   Thanks for the de-spam help! I've been blocking the accounts and the associated IP addresses as they come in, but it looks like they're bouncing around a lot (no idea why- what a waste of time!) I've gone ahead and blocked large ranges of IP addresses, so hopefully that'll calm it down for now. I'll do more large-range blocking later if/when they re-appear. —PhilipNeustrom

2016-03-18 14:23:12   I have to thank in your editing. https://localwiki.org/davis/Waterside_of_jogging —MikioSugiyama

2016-03-20 22:06:59   Looks like something got b0rked. Should be fixed now. —PhilipNeustrom

2016-05-28 15:19:30   Hey Judith!-

Unfortunately, only around 10 people a day used the old events board. For comparison, several thousand people look at the "Apartments" page every day. I think a city-wide events board could be really useful, but the format of the old events board page wasn't helpful enough to enough people to be worth the technical up-keep. Rather than just being a regular page, it was a function of the wiki itself, meaning that fixes (even regulating spam) to it required coding efforts. It was a tradeoff we had to make with our very limited resources a the time. It seems like something that could be a separate site, or a separate, new function integrated into the wiki. Portland's http://calagator.org/ is a good example of this.

As an experiment, maybe we should try using a regular wiki page to post events to, or if there's a consensus around a good city-wide events site, we could make a prominent link to one. —PhilipNeustrom

2017-01-01 22:26:55   Thanks for persistently de-spamming the apartment pages! —DougWalter

2017-02-27 17:22:55   No, I have not been able to verify, but I am a docent there myself and I emailed them today, but they haven't responded (yet?). I think it's true or could be true, times are crazy like this, it's no April Fools Day yet. It would be crazy though, and destructive, and it could ruin the Pence, because they are not that rich (and depending on gifts for an important part). Replacing everything (imprints with "Pence" etc.) would be a very costly affair. Okay, if you remove, but I think this should be a major issue to all, Pence it the cultural heart of Davis. Well, maybe it is a joke, now I am starting to doubt it myself. I haven't noticed any of the uproar, but I am not in Downtown that much. —ConstantiaOomen

2017-02-27 19:08:31   You were right, I must pay more attention, but I think the timing would have been better on April 1. In an email to me, the author of the article, Ethan Victor, confirmed it's a joke. Could somebody please erase this specific Pence Wiki activity history, now I feel like a fool. ;-) Talking about fake news! —ConstantiaOomen

2017-06-06 20:56:27   Judith, there are Davis Wiki pages about restaurants in Woodland, Dixon and Winters with entries for several restaurants in each. Sue —SueHjerpe

2017-06-07 10:48:06   Judith, I'm sorry to know that the surrounding area info isn't included any more. I find it very useful. However the Davis wiki content is so outdated that it is not as useful in general as it was before the major changes a few years ago. Thanks for your effort to keep its remnants going.. Sue —SueHjerpe

There used to be a page for SD on the wiki.  It had many negative comments and some positive.  The owner made a big stink and started threatening legal action. It became so heated that the decision was made just to delete the page altogether, which seemed tolerable, if less than desirable, to all parties.  So, probably best to keep deleted, as you just did, but I thought you should have the back story in case things flared up again.  -- signed, an old gnome who still keeps an eye on things but it is too disgusted with the current format to contribute more than the occasional edit or to identify themselves.

  • In my current Editorial Philosophy Mode: businesses get handled four ways. First Case: If it's commercial-spam cut & paste: instant deletion.  Second Case: If the text is copy-paste from their own site, or badly "We Have a Store and We Sell Things!! " but they're local, I'll hash together an info-box, scrape their business website for as much detail as fits, and comment-tag that it needs more info/participation. Sometimes that works (Love Laundry comes to mind).  Sometimes there's a conflict between tidy and wordy, and business owners come back in and revise my simplified text. It usually works out.  Third Case: sometimes it's first-person but there's not a good way to rewrite text without sounding like I'm personally vouching for them  (photographers often fall in this category).  Fourth Case: Commercial link, tagged in somewhere, for a regional service. I delete, explain what Wiki Expectations Are (in the Plz Describe Change Kthx) and often this kind of editor never comes back.
    • I'm not disagreeing with your edit.  I just wanted to let you know that in this case, 1) the editor (the business owner) may come back, and if he does, 2) he could be a problem. -- same old gnome
      • I was entirely unaware of the previous issue. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
        • Sure.  Thanks for all the work you do on the wiki.
